The Life and Times of an Elderly Beagle

I’m sure you’ve all wondered at some point or another, about how to find that human that is perfect for you. Well, today I am going to cover some of the main points in the selection process.

  1. You want to find a human that can use the bathroom on their own. There is nothing worse than trying to change a diaper with no opposable thumb on any of your four paws. No offense!
  2. Secondly, how old is this human? Young ones are cute, but see note 1, above. Older humans aren’t that bad or stupid. You can teach them simple things, like when to feed you, and when to let you out to do your business. The best option for most dogs, is what the humans call “teens”. These interesting creatures are old enough to use the bathroom, they like animals, and they are fairly responsible.
  3. Activity Level-Some humans (okay, most) just sit around on the furniture all day (if they are allowed to do that in your home), and do nothing. If you, like me, are active, this will not do. Run over to the local human exercise place (gyms), and check out some of those humans. They are probably there just because they don’t have a dog to walk. Why not help both of you out, and introduce yourself, preferably with a loud bark or howl? Once they get over the initial shock of having a dog in the gym, they will realize what great luck they have, and go home with you.

These are the main points of finding the perfect human for you. Of course, if you are currently residing in a bad place (a.k.a “animal” shelters), you will see many humans coming and going. In this case, my advice is to remain as calm as possible, and give them those “puppy dog eyes”. Humans can’t resist our big beautiful eyes. Well, I better be going. Until next time…

I failed to mention the loves of my life, mostly because it is a very personal thing to me. But I have loved before, and experienced great loss when it comes to love. There have only been two loves in my life, and one was the neighbor dog. He was tall, dark and furry, just what I look for in a lover. He and his family moved before we really got too involved. That turned out to be good, because it would have hurt too much to lose him later.
The other great love of my life was Jake. He lived with my for a few dog years, and I really loved Jake. But Jake wasn’t too bright in certain areas, like staying out of the road, and staying in our yard. Jake and I ran away together, but it wasn’t intentional on my part. I went along with him because I knew that he would never be able to find his way home, and to watch over him along the way. You see, Jake spent most of his early life chained to a dog house. He promised himself (he told me later) that he would one day run free and experience everything the world had to offer. And he almost did!
We traveled the world (well, a small part of it), the two of us, for two human weeks. Our people were VERY upset, and spent lots of time looking for us. It ended suddenly and painlessly for Jake, when he chased a rabbit into the road and was hit by a car and killed. I was very devastated at the loss of my dear friend, but I was lucky enough to re-connect with my humans. They never gave up on us, or me, and I am grateful.

I’d like to take some time to introduce my current siblings to you. I talk about them in my posts, but do you see any pictures of them? Not yet. That is only because I can remember what I did 70 years ago, but yesterday is still a mystery.
Foxy red dogAnyway, the red dog is Foxy (seen here helping me open presents), and the black and white with some brown is Sarah. They are cool, but sometimes they both get mad at me and knock me over. I can’t see real well, and sometimes accidentally bump into people, which makes these people mad. So, they knock me over. It’s more like I fall over, since I don’t have much strength in my back legs.
Sarah the Teagle
So, that’s my family, minus the two crazy parakeets and my human sister. Have a good week.

My day was pretty uneventful, besides the morning walk with Dad and Foxy and Sarah. I spent most of the morning sleeping, and later I went for a ride in the car. Then I came home and ate, and went back to sleep in the bedroom. Nothing too exciting to share with all of you.

When I said strange, I meant weird. Not only are they really nice people, but my new Mom can hear what I am saying! That’s weird. But, I like it. And there is another dog in the house. Her name is Emily, and she is a Beagle/Bassett mix.
Emily the Bagle
She seems nice, but she acts like she owns the place. Clearly, the people do. I am now about 10 years old, and the first years of my life were horrible. I am hoping that things go well from here on out.
So, here we are in a small apartment in Northeastern Pennsylvania, living above a family full of kids. I don’t really like kids, mostly because they are noisy and constantly on the move. I really like other dogs, though, since you know right away where you stand with them. Anyway, these humans take me and Emily for walks, feed us on time every day, and talk to us all the time. It is a good situation. I decide to shake things up a bit…

I don’t remember much of his face, but I do remember the beatings. Every time I barked, when he was near me, I’d get a good smack. Sometimes on my head, sometimes my back end, but always I’d be hit. I have to admit that it took me a long time to figure it out. I thought he loved me. He took me hunting, and tried to spend a lot of time with me, I was apparently too talkative for him. Then one day, this nice female human came along and took me from him. I spent a few days with her, and then she couldn’t take me anymore, either. Was there something wrong with me?
She took me to this place, the bad place, where they lock up all the animals, and people come in to look at them. And some people take the animals out of the cages, and you never see them again. Very scary. I don’t know what happens to those animals. I hope they are okay. I’m safe here, but not having much fun.
Then, one day, these two humans come in, one male and one female, and they look at me and go nuts. They think I am the greatest thing since the dog in the cage next to me. But they really like me. The next thing you know, the male human opens the cage door, and wants to take me out. I put up a good fight, but he is too much for me. I am terrified! He doesn’t look like the last horrible human I had, but I can’t trust him, certainly not at this stage. He persists, and I am on my way to a strange new home…

Hi,
And welcome to my blog! I am a 105 year old Beagle (that’s 15 years to any people reading this), and my name is Lilibeth. I decided that it was about time to record all the thoughts and feelings that I have had over this time. As I am getting older, I felt that it was important to document my life, as only I can do, for future Beagles. My people sometimes thought that I was laying little Beagle eggs, but, alas, I was unsuccessful. I was, however successful in living a long and prosperous life.
So, let’s start at the beginning…

That’s me with my bagle. My humans thought it would be funny to give a Beagle a bagle. “Ha, Ha”, I say.
