The Life and Times of an Elderly Beagle

I failed to mention the loves of my life, mostly because it is a very personal thing to me. But I have loved before, and experienced great loss when it comes to love. There have only been two loves in my life, and one was the neighbor dog. He was tall, dark and furry, just what I look for in a lover. He and his family moved before we really got too involved. That turned out to be good, because it would have hurt too much to lose him later.
The other great love of my life was Jake. He lived with my for a few dog years, and I really loved Jake. But Jake wasn’t too bright in certain areas, like staying out of the road, and staying in our yard. Jake and I ran away together, but it wasn’t intentional on my part. I went along with him because I knew that he would never be able to find his way home, and to watch over him along the way. You see, Jake spent most of his early life chained to a dog house. He promised himself (he told me later) that he would one day run free and experience everything the world had to offer. And he almost did!
We traveled the world (well, a small part of it), the two of us, for two human weeks. Our people were VERY upset, and spent lots of time looking for us. It ended suddenly and painlessly for Jake, when he chased a rabbit into the road and was hit by a car and killed. I was very devastated at the loss of my dear friend, but I was lucky enough to re-connect with my humans. They never gave up on us, or me, and I am grateful.
